Anyone who has suffered from pimples has probably pondered the following question: What causes acne and what are the best acne cures?

A pimple is caused when a pore, or follicle, becomes clogged by the face’s natural oil, called sebum. This oil can trap bacteria in the pore, which causes the skin around the pore to rise and even become red and painful.

There are actually two different types of acne. Non-inflammatory and inflammatory. There are significant differences between the two. Generally not painful, although none-too-pleasant, whiteheads and blackheads fall under then non-inflammatory category.

Whiteheads form under the skin when pores become blocked by the face’s natural oil, called sebum. Sebum traps bacteria into the pore, which forms a sometimes visible white bump.

Blackheads occur when the pore opens and collects sebum. Sebum contains a pigment called melanin, which oxidizes when it comes in contact with oxygen. This is what causes the black-ish color to appear.

Inflammatory acne is “the bad stuff.” There are four common pimple types in this category: papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. All of these pimples have one thing in common: inflammation. This occurs when the bacteria build-up is so intense that white blood cells flood in to stave off the bacteria. They are often painful and can sometimes leave scars.

Now that we’re clear on what causes pimples, that leaves one question: What are the best acne cures? As there are so many different varieties of skin type, it is impossible to find one miracle-cure that will suit everyone. However, there are some tips below that are definitely worth giving a try:

  • Invest in a good, over-the-counter cleanser, toner, and moisturizer set. Develop a daily routine in which you clean your skin, tone and tighten it, and replenish your skin’s moisture. You’re sure to notice a difference if you commit to this routine daily, although you might have to try a few brands to find the one that suits your skin best.
  • Take a daily multi-vitamin. Studies have shown that vitamin-deficient people are more likely to have breakouts. Vitamins are also great for your body as a whole.
  • Stress is a HUGE contributor to breakouts. If you find you’re pretty wound-up a lot of the time, try setting aside half an hour a day in which you can read, listen to calming music, watch television, or simply chill out or nap. You’ll find that reducing your stress can do wonders for your complexion!
  • And for the gals–birth control is quite often prescribed to help clear up acne, as it regulates the hormones that can often cause breakouts in teenagers and young adults.
